@PostMasterGeneral that's the same rule, though. the pitcher has no obligation to wait for the batter to step back in the box unless the batter has requested permission from the umpire and the umpire has granted it
@PostMasterGeneral umpires already have zero obligation to grant a request for "time," batters just always assume it will be granted and umpires allow them to get away with it.
the unwritten "rules" of baseball have more force than the gd written rules.
